Cockatoo Island

Cockatoo Island is a former convict penal establishment and naval shipyard, located in the heart of Sydney Harbour. The island is a source of intrigue and inspiration for visitors owing to its heritage buildings, distinctive terrain and panoramic views.

Cockatoo Island operated as a convict penal establishment (1839-69), primarily as a place of secondary punishment for convicts who had re-offended in the colonies. The island also the site of one of Australia's biggest shipyards, operating between 1857 and 1991. The first of its two dry docks was built by convicts and contains the nation's most extensive and varied record of shipbuilding.

Cockatoo Island is a World Heritage Site.
