Tour Sydney Park Brick Kilns
Please join Glenn Merry, City of Sydney Specialist Project Manager for a walking tour to learn about the rich history of the Brick Kiln site, the issues currently facing the structures and the exciting works which are planned to stabilise, restore and revitalise the Sydney Park Brick Kilns before the brick kilns precinct is closed for the renewal works.
The brick kilns and chimneys in Sydney Park, on the corner of the Princes Highway and Sydney Park Road in Alexandria, are a symbol of the city’s industrial heritage and hold historical and cultural significance.
Before European settlement this area was a forest of turpentine and ironbark trees. It became a brickworks because of the rich clay beds that lie underground. Josiah Gentle established Bedford Bricks in 1893 baking bricks for hundreds of Sydney homes and businesses. Clay was extracted from deep pits, crushed and pressed into green bricks that were fired in the large kilns.
Over time the kilns have deteriorated. Works are scheduled to commence in mid-2025 to stabilise the brick kilns and renew the landscaping in this area. This work will retain the site’s industrial character and create a special place in the landscape for the community to enjoy.
Important Note: During the walk, some areas of uneven ground may be encountered. Those attending are encouraged to wear sturdy closed footwear.
